When the Second World War broke out in Europe, the production of military aircraft for the Allied war effort dramatically increased. The Bristol Aeroplane Company in England asked its valve supplier, The Thompson Products Company of Cleveland, Ohio, to recommend a reliable forging supplier for Bristol’s rapidly expanding engine production.

Due to its excellent experiences, Thompson recommended the Steel Improvement Company, now known as SIFCO. Our Cleveland forging company rose to the task and would supply a large number of critical components for aircraft, torpedoes, tanks, guns and engines throughout the war. Additional airplane products forged for Bristol were master connecting rods, articulating rods and airscrew shafts. So critical to the war effort were these forgings that before the end of World War II, SIFCO was shipping forgings seven days a week to Bristol. As just one example of SIFCO’s contribution to our wartime allies, it produced forgings for the 5,962 long-range night fighters known as the Bristol Beaufighter.

Since contributing significantly to the Allies’ victory in World War II, SIFCO has maintained a strong relationship with its European postwar allies.

“Just as has always been the case, our European customers are interested in SIFCO’s value proposition of providing mission-critical, high-performance products at a reasonable and competitive price,” said Ian Murray, SIFCO’s director of sales and marketing. “Our mantra is that SIFCO performs, the customer succeeds, together we grow.”

As of its centennial, SIFCO’s International customer base continues to grow with European leaders in landing gears, actuation, and airframe being added to SIFCO’s portfolio. SIFCO supplies forgings  new  commercial, military, and business jet programs, as well as other products both directly and through their subcontractors. “SIFCO’s willingness to help a customer with our creativity positions us well for other landing-gear components, such as the 787 and A320” commented Murray

SIFCO also supplies critical Landing Gear structure to Canadian Landing Gear Customers in the military and commercial markets.
